exquisites is a queer reading series in Brooklyn, NY co-hosted by danilo machado and Em Marie Kohl. The curatorial style of the series is inspired by the surrealist game exquisite corpse, where the whole is made collaboratively.
In that spirit, danilo and Em select an initial writer for each reading who begins a chain of nominations (they nominate a poet, who nominates another, and so on). As the series grows, a nonheirarchical constellation of intersectional queer and trans poets at various stages of their careers—from awarding-winning published writers to emerging poets for whom exquisites is amongst their first readings—grows.
In exquisites first year (2022-2023) we hosted 67 readers, distributed $6,150 in honorariums and raised $1,772 for organizations. exquisites readings are held first Thursdays at Art Cafe + Bar on Pacific St in Brooklyn. Summer 2023 exquisites expanded into a micro-anthology publication series & community workshops. exquisites is supported by Poets & Writers and the Brooklyn Arts Council.
